“WHY ABI SHOULD DIE?”

“Abi is my son” அப்டின்னார். “He’s a very good boy, we’ll go to church together. He used to pick me at main road and drop me in my home. I know how much he suffered to win over that cancer. Unwantedly he took siddha ( he meant ayurveda) that’s the problem.”

“My country people used to come here for treatment and they are getting cured. I came here with stroke when i came back to India on 2018, now look me, Do I walk like a man who had stroke? People all over world are coming to Chennai for getting cured”

“Then, Why should Abi die?”

English medicine மட்டும்தான் proved evident scientific medicine.

I lost my childhood friend Abi before a couple of days.

“Why Abi should die?”
A Nigerian acquaintance asked me this question.
Abi had been diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal Cancer before four years. After six months of intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he had completely recovered within six months. He had resumed his usual life within one year.
Over the next couple of years, Abi had only continued Post Cancer Treatment and Evidence-based medicine during the convalescing phase. He was completely healthy during that period. Due to an unknown misguidance, he suddenly converted into a vegetarian and started taking Ayurveda medicines. His body drastically thinned over a short period of time.
It also became a point of conflict between us, and I started arguing with him about taking Ayurveda medicines. These last couple of months, I got busy with my semester exams and managing healthcare logistics for a friend’s parent. Abi’s health had worsened during this phase and I was not informed about his condition as I might scold him. All on a sudden, I got a phone call informing me that he’s no more.
I could neither cry nor process the information. I was also worried about his mother’s health. I could not process anything until completing the final rites.
A Nigerian was sitting outside Abi’s home throughout the day. I asked him if he knew Abi.
“Abi is my son”, he said.
“He’s a very good boy, we’ll go to church together. He used to pick me at main road and drop me in my home. I know how much he suffered to win over that cancer. Unwantedly he took siddha ( he meant ayurveda) that’s the problem.”, he added.
“My country people used to come here for treatment and they are getting cured. I came here with stroke when i came back to India on 2018, now look me, Do I walk like a man who had stroke? People all over world are coming to Chennai for getting cured”
“Then, Why should Abi die?” He asked me, and I’m still shaken and haunted by his question.
I bereft of a good friendship today. He was educated, and he was surrounded by educated people, but what is the use? We are mindlessly replacing Siddha, Ayurveda in place of critical medical care, and losing valuable human lives.
When we were traveling on a Uttar Pradesh train en route Nepal, a Hindi family was on the trained with us. They hailed from Maharaj Kanj, UP. They were returning home after completing an eye surgery for their child.
We asked them why they had chosen Chennai, instead of choosing a place that is closer to their hometown.
They had responded that the respective medical facility was not available in UP. Though Nepal is a closer option, it was far expensive. The surgery would have cost 17 lakhs at Kathmandu, and it had cost only one lakh rupees for complete surgical process at a private hospital and accommodation expenses at Chennai.
Tamilnadu has an enormous healthcare infrastructure, and every option is possible here. We see people from various countries visiting our state on a medical tour. Why should our people die? When evidence-based medicine has solutions for all health conditions that demand critical attention and care, why people should choose ayurveda, and siddha, only to suffer and die later?
His question still feels like a slipper shot.
I had known him since 2009. We studied 11th and 12th std together in 2015-16. He pursued engineering but he was deeply passionate about photography. I was a trainee press correspondent at Vikatan in 2017. I really wanted him to pursue a career in Media. I asked him to apply for the training scheme in the following year. He was selected as a trainee photographer, and shot many lovely photos!
After a year, I went up on the dias and collected his certificate of completion, because he was diagnosed with cancer by then. After six months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, he resumed his normal life. Everything was alright until the point where he had started taking ayurvedic medicines. When he was finally admitted in an allopathic hospital, the only thing that they had asked was why he had stopped taking allopathic treatment.
“Are you a doctor to choose some other ways of treatment?” they had asked him.
We are not doctors to choose treatment as per our will. True, right?
We’re from the same locality. We studied at the same school. We worked at the same media organisation. I’m flooded by his memories now. I have been thinking about visiting his cemetery.
I’m undone and everything that has been happening around me is unbearable. I couldn’t write any further. It is a terribly unfair loss. His lover was beating herself and sobbing at the funeral. Whatever has happened over the couple of days has been hauntingly consuming me.
This is my humble request. The Siddha or Ayurveda medicines might be suitable for external application. Kindly don’t sabotage the precious lives by not choosing evidence-based medicine for critical healthcare conditions. (English medicine) Evidence-based medicine should be the one and only available, trustworthy form of care.
